Eclipse and You



Eclipse is a moonkins main dps source, so to speak. Its a proc that pretty much forces us to use both Arcane and Nature damage in a nifty rotation. Now thats cool, but the problem with Eclipse has been that if we are unlucky and have to move during a proc (mind you, the proc is almost always up), our dps goes to hell in most cases. Because we rely on this proc so much, we're really gimped when we have to keep running through our Lunar Ecplise (the one that enhances Starfire). Since Starfire has the longest casting time, thats also the spell that hurts the most to lose.

If we look back to the early days, the whole adding Eclipse and everything that comes with it has been a great improvement to the basics of playing a moonkin, and since ive played as moonkin pretty much since level 10, i have seen it all. Before the whole Eclipse thing, we just did our dots and one-button-nukes, trying to find it fun. Like, take TBC. If you had low haste, you went for Wraths, and if you haste was good, you could do the Starfires. That was mainly the case for the old Eclipse, that had a cooldown that counted for both. It was a pain, because you always spammed Wrath or Starfire to proc the Eclipse you wanted, and then as soon as the proc was off and cooldown on, you had to really stare at the cooldown timer to make sure you didnt land the last spell too late, so you would proc the wrong Eclipse, as that would suck.

Now the cooldowns are separated, so after a Starfire proc (Lunar), the Wrath one (Solar) is off cooldown and then as you finish your last Starfire(s) you will automatically go into the other proc, and so you keep on chaining them. This is the thing that "forces" us to use both Arcane and Nature damage, which in a way isnt too bad.

Still its the RNG aspect, which can be highly unpredictable. Since Wrath only has a certain percentage chance of proccing Lunar Eclipse, and only crits gives your spell the chance for a proc, everyone should get the point. You can be unlucky, really unlucky. Say you have 3-4 normal hits in a row, then maybe 3 crits, but none of them procs Eclipse. So you're firing off like 10 Wraths waiting for the cookies rain from the sky. 10 Wraths equals about 8-10 seconds roughly (varies with spell haste), and during this time you dont really contribute much dps wise.

And as we're speaking of Wrath.. God, i really hate how this spell, which makes out more than 50% of our rotation, and the spell we cast the most, is the one spell that gets screwed by Bloodlust and Heroism. Since an okay'ish geared moonkin can even reach the haste soft-cap here, it means BL/hero has nothing to offer us over 50% of its uptime. Which again means we're the class (as far as i know) that benefits the least from this spell. Shame! There has been some talk about a glyph that can up the cast time on Wrath, and scale damage a bit (i hope), so that with the amount of haste we got, dont get punished for it. As it is now, Wrath casting time is shorter than the global cooldown even with just the Nature's Grace proc, which procs a lot. Add some lag to the pot, and this is pretty lame.

I'm going to talk here a moment as someone who knows next to nothing about boomkin and plays one purely as a scrubby alt.

But after doing my first couple dungeons/heroics on my boomkin, I'm curious about the design of eclipse and what the intent is behind it's design the way it is.

Clearly it provides too much of your DPS. When it pops, and you get randomly stunned/boss shifting stages in the encounter where you can't DPS, you just lost a huge chunk of DPS. That's fairly irritating even as someone who just picked up the moonkin spec.

But here's the thing. It doesn proc on the first spell that can proc it. It gets a little annoying when you know eclipse can proc and your'e nuking away for 4-10 wraths before the RNG gods smile upon you and it finally procs (yes I am using the right spell to proc the right type of eclipse -_-).

Would it be OP if it got the Taste for Blood treatment and anytime Lunar or Solar eclipse CAN proc from Starfire/Wrath it WILL proc? Maybe I'm not even fully understanding moonkin but I would think that might remove a little of the RNG. Like I said, I don't know moonkins very well at all, but this one little thing seemed like it would be quite irritating to fulltime moonkins :o

The purpose behind Eclipse was to encourage Balance druids to cast something besides their hardest hitting spell over and over again. From this thread it appears at least some of you were content with a "rotation" like that, but you'll have to believe me that it was a very common complaint we heard from druids as to what they disliked or why they didn't play Balance.

Now it's possible to base a rotation around a single spells. Mages are designed to do just that. However, they also have a lot of procs, cooldowns, secondary effects and other situational events that mean that even though you're getting most of your damage from one button, you're managing a lot.

We could have gone that way with Balance druids. We didn't largely because part of the kit of Balance is balance, and we thought that manifested itself nicely in switching between Arcane and Nature spells, or Starfire and Wrath, or Lunar and Solar.

The problem with Eclipse (as I've stated many times, so I find the comments that we won't address the issue to be a trifle unfair) is that it now accounts for so much of Balance's damage that the random element can be punishing. Having to shift positions right when you get a proc should be a little bit of a bummer on the level of missing a few crits in a row, and not a devastating blow to your dps.

We're keeping Eclipse, but the Cataclysm version is a pretty radical overhaul that we hope to be able to reveal soon. It removes a lot of the random element. :)




I dont know about you, but at least im exited to see what they plan for us fluffykins for the next expansion. I dont expect to top meters, but i dont want to be the only one losing 2k dps as ranged on Festergut, or losing 4k dps on Sindragosa because every other time i got a nifty Starfire Eclipse, i got the Unchained Magic as well, and then i might as well just go afk and wank or something, thats how randomly stupid it feels at times. Just because RNG raped me with.. with.. this.

Beca: Thanks! If you think anyone would have any interest of reading it, then sure have a go :) Im the only boomkin in my guild, so i dont have anyone to discuss it with, except a feral/resto/sometimes-boomkin. I love moonkins with a passion, as ive been one since i started the game pretty much :D
